Helping to increase Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Programs throughout Maryland.
Maryland citizens were already aware of the health risks associated with smoking. So our strategy was to forego the “health risk” education and focus on changing the social norms.
GKV REACH initiated an ongoing grassroots community outreach program. The rallying cry for the movement became, “Maryland – Smoking Stops Here.” The core message empowered Marylanders to stand up and say, “No smoking in my car. Not in my home. And definitely not in front of my children.”
We are seeing dramatic decreases in cigarette smoking and overall tobacco use. Cigarette smoking: 30.6% decline among middle school students, 23.5% decline among high school students, 12.0% decline among all adults. Overall tobacco use: 14.0% decline among all Maryland youth, 9.2% decline among all adults.
